How secure are the windows of your home? Many homeowners pay little attention to window security, although they take care to install robust door security. Burglars are more likely to break in through windows than to attempt to get in through a locked door, and inadequate window locks can be a weak link in your home’s security. Don’t rely on the protection of home insurance; MD homeowners can take some proactive steps to make their windows more secure.
• Sliding windows should have devices to prevent them from being opened from outside. Use wooden or metal dowels in the tracks of horizontal sliding windows, and pins through the frames of vertical sliding windows.
• Screens on windows do little to improve security. While they can slow down a burglar they can be easily cut and removed.
• Louvered windows are great for ventilation but are difficult to secure. Consider replacing louvered windows with more secure double-hung windows.
• Old-style sash window locks are attached with wood screws, and can easily be opened by a thief using a crowbar. They can be made more secure by using extra-long wood screws, or fitting strong bolt locks.
Installing window locks does not require advanced carpentry skills, and window locking kits are on sale at hardware stores. Fitting stronger locks on your windows to enhance home security may qualify you for discounts that reduce the cost of home insurance MD can trust. So remember homeowners, fortify your windows!
